Alder is a good wood for making walking stick handles, particularly in the UK, as it is lightweight, easy to carve and holds detail well. Alder has a fine, even, and generally straight grain with a uniform, velvety texture. The color ranges from pale tan to a reddish-brown, which tends to darken with age, and its closed pores create a smooth appearance. All wood used is UK grown and UK sourced.
All wood kiln, air dried or recycled. I cut a few blanks at a time. I look for grain and interesting patina.
Product Description
A crafted handle blank made from natural wood enabling the buyer to finish. Each handle is finished 'over sized' to allow for waste material to be removed and attach to a shank up to an inch and a quarter in thickness.
How to use
Simple tools and a bit of work will soon have your handle ready to fit to a suitable shank.
I recommend and use a traditional peg and socket joint. I do not recommend or use threaded rods. Wood is a natural material and should be allowed to move and flex. Using a threaded rod does not allow natural movement of the wood therefore is liable to cause breakout.
